Musk was born June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa, to a Canadian-English mother and prominent model Maye Musk and a South African-born British father and electrical/mechanical engineer Errol Musk. More about Elon Musk: https://www.amazon.com/gp/search?ie=UTF8&tag=tra0c7-20&linkCode=ur2&linkId=8eeb48a673f6266960b70fad3a6d7363&camp=1789&creative=9325&index=books&keywords=elon%20musk After his parents divorced in 1980, Musk lived mostly with his father in locations in South Africa. He taught himself computer programming and at age 12 sold the computer code for a video game called Blastar for $500. Musk attended Waterkloof House Preparatory School before graduating from Pretoria Boys High School and moving to Canada in 1988 at age 17, after obtaining Canadian citizenship through his mother. He did so before his South African military service, reasoning that it would be easier to emigrate to the United States from Canada than from South Africa. At age 19, Musk was accepted into Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario for undergraduate study, and in 1992, after spending two years at Queen's University, Musk transferred to the University of Pennsylvania where he eventually received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from the Wharton School. Musk stayed on a year to finish his second bachelor's degree. In 1995, age 24, Musk moved to California to begin a PhD in Applied physics at Stanford, but left the program after two days to pursue his entrepreneurial aspirations in the areas of the Internet, renewable energy and outer space. In 2002, he became an American citizen. In 1995, Musk started Zip2, a web software company, with his brother, Kimbal. The company developed and marketed an Internet "city guide" for the newspaper publishing industry. Musk obtained contracts with The New York Times and the Chicago Tribune and persuaded the board of directors to abandon plans for a merger with a company called CitySearch. Compaq acquired Zip2 for US$307 million in cash and US$34 million in stock options in 1999. Musk received 7% or $22 million from the sale. In March 1999, Musk co-founded X.com, an online financial services and e-mail payment company. One year later, the company merged with Confinity, which had a money transfer service called PayPal. The merged company focused on the PayPal service and was renamed as PayPal in 2001. PayPal's early growth was driven mainly by a viral marketing campaign where new customers were recruited when they received money through the service. In October 2002, PayPal was acquired by eBay for US$1.5 billion in stock, of which $165 million was given to Musk. Before its sale, Musk, the company's largest shareholder, owned 11.7% of PayPal's shares. With $100 million of his early fortune, Musk founded his third company, Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX, in June 2002. Musk is CEO and Chief Designer (CTO) of the Hawthorne, California-based company. SpaceX develops and manufactures space launch vehicles with a focus on advancing the state of rocket technology. The company's first two launch vehicles are the Falcon 1 and Falcon 9 rockets, and its first spacecraft is the Dragon.[40] In seven years, SpaceX designed the family of Falcon launch vehicles and the Dragon multi-purpose spacecraft from the ground up.[citation needed] In September 2009, SpaceX's Falcon 1 rocket, designed by Musk, became the first privately funded liquid-fuelled vehicle to put a satellite into Earth orbit.[citation needed] On May 25, 2012, the SpaceX Dragon vehicle berthed with the ISS, making history as the first commercial company to launch and berth a vehicle to the International Space Station. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elon_Musk

FT.com reported on Oct 7, 2012 that fund giant "BlackRock racks up $1m ad bill in just one day" BlackRock has spent more than $1m in one day on newspaper advertising, according to an Ignites Europe estimate, as part of an effort to increase brand awareness in key retail markets. The asset management firm ran colour spreads -- two full-page adverts -- in the global editions of the Financial Times (Ignites Europe's parent company), The Wall Street Journal and City AM, a London free sheet on October 3. A two-page spread in the global edition of the FT costs around £271,000 ($437,300), according to the newspaper's advertising ratecard, which is available online, while a colour centre section in the WSJ's global edition costs $720,221. This is before any discount. BlackRock says that further ads will run in the coming days and weeks in "key titles in key markets" through Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific. The adverts follow a similar effort made earlier this year, when BlackRock launched an international print and online advertising campaign in the UK and in other targeted countries. The current campaign is also being run online, where BlackRock banners ask readers 'Isn't it time to be an investor again?' In August, BlackRock filed EU trademarks for the slogans -- including 'So what do I do with my money?' and 'Investing for a new world' -- which were featured in last week's campaign. The firm's objective is to build its reputation among individual investors and help strengthen its relationships with advisers and distribution partners, says a BlackRock spokesperson. The aim is to also spark conversations with institutional clients and, ultimately, help grow its retail business. The campaign tells investors to contact their advisers to talk about what they need to do "to build what [they] will need tomorrow". "This may mean reassessing your portfolio", reads the advert. Diana Mackay, head of market research company Fund Buyer Focus, says the timing of the campaign is "interesting", especially given the fact that in the UK the retail distribution review will be introduced in January 2013. The timing is additionally very important, she says, because earlier this week the UK government launched landmark pension reforms, which will see millions of employees automatically enrolled into workplace schemes. Ms Mackay says: "I think [BlackRock] is doing this at an important time. With RDR, there is an expectation that more people will buy directly from asset managers. Name and brand recognition will become increasingly important." BlackRock's retail campaign is accompanied by a company RDR initiative, which includes online guides for IFAs as well as a raft of staff hires. According to an ongoing survey by Fund Buyer Focus, BlackRock trails behind M&G and Invesco as the preferred fund supplier for UK fund selectors. However, the US group is the leader in the rest of Europe. "BlackRock is helping IFAs do their jobs by building recognition [of their own brand]. If an IFA presents a number of funds to a client, the client is more likely to respond positively if it has heard the name of the provider before," says Ms Mackay. "Outside the UK, there are also some big distributors that require asset managers to have certain advertising activities to promote their name to consumers because it makes their job easier." BlackRock's first campaign allowed it to engage with investors it had never talked to before, says the firm. "It has sparked new conversations with existing and new clients and partners, and is opening doors for new relationships we might never have had," says BlackRock. The firm adds that advisers, fund selectors and distribution partners have made "hundreds of thousands of requests" to use the BlackRock ad in their own presentations to clients. However, BlackRock says it is seeking to improve on its previous campaign by shifting focus from "cost of cash, income longevity, alternatives and indexing" to the promotion of only three areas: income, indexing and equities. "We believe that these three areas provide some of the most attractive opportunities for investors to take the small, practical steps to get [them] back into the market," says BlackRock. Statistics from the UK's Investment Management Association shows that net retail sales in August were £23m, the lowest since October 2008, when there were outflows of £490m.
